A building that engages the community of Ipswich with their local justice system has been awarded top honours in the Australian Institute of Architects’ 2010 Darling Downs Regional Architecture Awards.

The Ipswich Justice Precinct by Cox Rayner Architects with ABM Architects was awarded Darling Downs’ 2010 Building of the Year.

"Located on the edge of the Ipswich CBD, this court building, which has been entered in three categories - public architecture, interior and art in architecture - engages with the public domain in a number of ways and makes the interaction of the community with the justice system, highly visible and accessible," says Bud Brannigan, Queensland state awards director.

"As an address to this civic precinct, a fully glazed L — shaped wall embraces an external courtyard space at the street edge, providing transparency both into, and out of, the public domain, for the full height of the building, activating this northern edge.”
