This year’s shortlist for Interior Design features an inspiring lineup of projects:

• The Boot Factory and Mill Hill Centre Precinct by Archer Office.

The LCI Melbourne Head Office fitout represents an adaptive reuse approach that balances sustainability, functionality, and cultural respect.jpg — Boot Factory and Mill Hill Centre Precinct is an exemplar of adaptive reuse, breathing new life into two Council-owned buildings constructed a century apart, alongside the revitalisation of Norman Lee Place to form a new public square in Bondi Junction.

• Arup Brisbane Workplace by Arup.

Arup new workplace in Brisbane is the result of a long local search for a location that represents its values.jpg — Arup intentionally selected an existing building, recognising the importance of limiting its carbon footprint, and wanting to demonstrate that unique, sustainable and dynamic workplaces could be delivered within typical commercial buildings.

• Greenhouse Grove by Envirotecture.

Greenhouse Grove balances cool and warm natural materials, creating an atmosphere that shifts seamlessly between indoors and outdoors.jpg — This heritage home has a lovely character, but needed some light-touch interventions to improve modern life in terms of functionality, but also to ensure it could be healthier and more comfortable all year round (despite the extremes in weather).

• Subtle Shift by Steffen Welsch Architects.

Subtle Shifts transformed an inefficient suburban house into a functional, comfortable and energysmart home.jpg — Sustainable architecture and design need to ensure that building less can improve functionality, amenity, efficiency, and value. Subtle Shift demonstrates this.

• Perpetual by Gray Puksand.

Conceptualising Perpetual in its literal sense, the design vision forms as a layering of past, present and future.jpg — Perpetual means enduring and sustainable. The practice developed a creative fusion of legacy and change to generate new value for teams, community and the environment.

• LCI Melbourne Workplace by Concept Black.

The LCI Melbourne Head Office fitout represents an adaptive reuse approach that balances sustainability, functionality, and cultural respect.jpg — The design sought to minimise new construction, preserving as much of the existing fitout as possible while reconfiguring key areas to enhance collaboration and wayfinding.

These projects exemplify excellence in Interior Design, celebrating a renovation or fit-out of the interior of an existing building where the sustainable design is involved with such factors as determining the efficient and effective use of space, selecting construction materials that offer low environmental impact and lowering pollution, waste, and the lowering of the overall energy consumption.

Now in its 19th year, the Sustainability Awards is Australia’s longest-running and most prestigious program celebrating excellence in sustainable design and architecture. On 19 November 2025, winners across 18 categories will be announced at the five-star Gala Evening at Sydney Town Hall.
