Australia’s path to deep emissions reduction increasingly centres on electrification – replacing fossil-fuel technologies with efficient electric alternatives, preferably powered by renewable energy. However, electrification isn’t just a climate solution – it’s a cost-of-living strategy that could save households thousands of dollars each year while reshaping how the nation powers its way into a resilient, energy-secure future.

All-electric living is inevitable, affordable and urgent. Achieving this transformation requires coordinated action across renewable technologies, finance and policy.

1. Expanding solar adoption

For a home to be fully electrified, every appliance and vehicle needs to be powered by electricity. But that’s only half the story. Where the electricity comes from, rather, how it is generated makes a big difference to decarbonisation goals and cost. When electricity is made from oil, coal or gas, half of the fossil fuels is lost during the generation process. Generating electricity from renewables – solar or wind – is a much more efficient process, with higher energy conversion.

Solar power sits at the heart of electrification. Rooftop photovoltaic systems allow households and small businesses to generate their own energy, reducing reliance on fossil fuels while lowering electricity bills. Well-designed solar installations can produce more energy than households can consume, enabling them to export surplus electricity back to the grid.

Electrification of homes and small businesses alone could eliminate about 70-75% of domestically-oriented emissions. However, decarbonisation is not just about replacing energy sources – it is about needing far less energy overall. Electrifying homes combined with widespread solar adoption, therefore, supports lower energy use, emissions reduction and energy affordability.

2. Investing in battery storage

Batteries enhance solar effectiveness by storing excess energy for later use. This reduces dependence on grid electricity during peak times and improves energy resilience. Adding batteries increases financial savings from electrification, complementing solar installations and enabling households to maximise renewable energy use. With sufficient storage capacity, solar batteries can transform a household from a net consumer to a net exporter of electricity, with all the surplus energy that the home doesn’t need being sent (and sold) to the grid.

However, the upfront cost of batteries is a major barrier, with only one in 40 households with rooftop solar installing them[1]. To make batteries more accessible, the Australian Government has introduced the Cheaper Home Batteries Program [2] that enables homes and small businesses with a solar installation to invest in small-scale batteries at a discounted price, helping them harness energy as well as store the excess energy generated during the day.

3. Strengthening the electric vehicle infrastructure

Transport electrification is another key pathway to decarbonising the Australian economy. Electric vehicles (EVs) consume far less energy than petrol vehicles due to higher efficiency – an electric car uses about a quarter of the energy required by a petrol car to travel one kilometre. However, this transition to EVs must also be backed by shared charging infrastructure installed everywhere from shopping centres and workplaces to hospitals and schools. Widespread accessibility supported by potentially free or low-cost charging options can accelerate EV adoption as well as reduce transport emissions and the gigantic oil import bill. Electrifying vehicles also integrates transport energy demand into the broader electricity system, simplifying energy management.

4. Financing mechanisms for solar adoption

The finance cost for rooftop solar in Australia is about five cents per kilowatt-hour against 40 cents per kilowatt-hour for retail electricity. The country is one of the biggest adopters of solar energy with more than 4.2 million rooftop photovoltaic installations[1]. However, the upfront costs for going solar remain a barrier for many households.

Financing models that spread costs over time can make solar installations more accessible. By shifting spending from fuel purchases to financed solar infrastructure investments with predictable, locked-in costs, households can transition to sustainable energy pathways protected by built-in anti-inflationary mechanisms, without large initial expenditures or future volatility from global geopolitical events while still capturing long-term savings by generating their own electricity.

5. Regulatory and policy reform

Policy settings play a decisive role in enabling electrification. Standards, incentives and planning frameworks can either accelerate or slow adoption. Achieving emissions targets requires future purchases – appliances, vehicles and buildings – to avoid fossil-fuel dependence. Regulatory reform supporting electrification and cheaper electricity prices, therefore, becomes central to national decarbonisation strategies. By making solar energy more affordable to households through convenient loans and subsidies, discounts on solar batteries, and feed-in tariffs among others, policy reforms are helping adoption of solar at scale across Australia.

Towards a decarbonised future

Electrification is not simply about installing new equipment. It represents a systemic change involving infrastructure, financing models, industry practices and consumer behaviour. Australia’s energy transition will likely depend on combining innovations in the renewables sector with supportive policy frameworks and financial mechanisms. Solar power, battery storage, electrified transport and regulatory reform collectively provide a pathway towards a lower-emissions economy. If implemented at scale, these measures could reshape how Australians generate, use and think about energy – delivering environmental and social benefits alongside economic opportunities.
