Working with nature, not against it

At the heart of regenerative design is a fundamental change in how we think about the relationship between the built and natural environments.

Natural systems are inherently interconnected. Water cycles, ecosystems, soil, vegetation, biodiversity, and climate all influence one another.

Regenerative design looks for opportunities to work with those processes.

Buildings and landscapes can be designed to slow and reuse stormwater rather than simply drain it away. Landscapes can restore habitat and biodiversity. Materials can be selected with their impacts on ecosystems and human health in mind. Passive design can respond to local climate rather than relying entirely on mechanical systems.

The result is a more integrated approach in which nature becomes a design partner rather than something to be managed around.

The benefits extend beyond the environment

Regenerative design is not only about ecological restoration.

Healthy ecosystems can contribute to healthier, more resilient communities. Access to nature can improve well-being. Cooler, greener neighbourhoods can help respond to extreme heat. Better water management can reduce pressure on infrastructure. Biodiverse landscapes can create more attractive and connected places.

This creates an important opportunity for the built environment sector to connect environmental performance with social value.

The most successful regenerative projects may therefore deliver multiple benefits at once—restoring ecological function while creating places that are healthier, more resilient, and more enjoyable to live and work in.

From building performance to place performance

Traditional sustainability metrics often focus on the performance of an individual building: energy consumption, water use, waste, carbon, and operational efficiency.

Regenerative design encourages a much broader perspective.

How does this project improve its surrounding ecosystem?

Does it contribute to biodiversity?
Does it restore or improve water cycles?
Does it enhance soil health?
Does it reduce urban heat?
Does it generate resources?
Does it strengthen community connections?
And can those benefits continue to grow over time?

This moves the conversation from building performance to place performance.

Can regenerative design become mainstream?

One of the biggest challenges is making regenerative design more than an inspiring concept reserved for exceptional projects.

The panel will explore what is required to normalise regenerative thinking across the built environment—from design and planning to procurement, construction, operation, and long-term stewardship.

That means developing practical frameworks, changing project briefs, improving collaboration between disciplines, and finding ways to measure outcomes that extend beyond traditional sustainability indicators.

It also means recognising that regeneration is a process, not a checklist.

A regenerative project should respond to its particular place, climate, ecology, and community. What works in one location may not be appropriate in another.

Designing for the long term

Perhaps the most important shift is one of time.

Conventional development often focuses on delivering a building. Regenerative design asks what happens over decades.

Can landscapes become more biodiverse as they mature?
Can buildings adapt as climate conditions change?
Can water systems become more effective over time?
Can communities develop stronger connections to place?
Can a project leave the surrounding environment in better condition than it found it?

These questions encourage designers and developers to think beyond completion and towards long-term stewardship and positive change.
