For example, sliding doors require far more space than hinge doors as they need somewhere to tuck away into when opened to avoid door jambs (whereas most other doors just swing outwards). However, the design of your house may influence the appropriate sizing for your door as high ceilings will mean you can increase the height of your door if desired.

In comparison to the standard door sizes overseas, Australian doors tend to be a little larger. The standard interior door size in America is 762 x 2032mm, which is slightly narrower and shorter than the average Australian door.

For the standard HDB flat in Singapore, the typical measurements of an internal door are fairly close to Australian standards though often a little wider and shorter – the average Singaporean internal door measures at 838mm width x 2130mm.

Standard door sizes in the UK are fairly similar to the US and the most common width for an internal door also 762mm (height 1981mm). Standard doors in India are usually a little wider and taller, measuring at 800mm width and 2045mm height. Typical South African doors are slightly narrower and shorter than average Australian doors, at 813mm wide and 2032mm high.

Overall, the standard door size Australia is on the large size. Perhaps you may want to take this into account if considering a custom or atypical door – clearly shorter and narrower doors work well for many countries, so if you’re looking to save some space or shake things up a little, perhaps choosing a non-standard door is the way to do it. However, it will always be cheaper to buy and install standard size doors than custom size bricks, so be aware of your budget while considering your options.

1. Sliding Door

The standard size of a sliding door varies greatly from 210cm – 240cm height and 222cm-357mm width. Sliding doors are space smart because they do not take up the room with swinging bulk when opened. They are a great choice for small houses, or if you enjoy the home feeling bright and open you may choose to install glass sliding doors like the ones pictured above as a way to get more light inside your home.

2. Front Door / External Doors

Front doors and external doors are often confused, but they are generally the same sizes. A house may have sliding back doors and a hinged front door, but the standard dimensions for an exterior sliding door is exactly the same as the standard dimensions for a sliding front door, and the same is true for all door types, making front doors and external doors functionally the same.

Standard dimensions for a front/external (hinged) door are 82cm wide x 204cm high. This may vary from 53-92cm wide, or from 204-234cm high and indeed external/front doors have the opportunity to be much larger than the internal doors of the home, but this is less common than you may think. 3. Internal Door

Internal doors are, obviously, the doors found inside the house. Bedroom doors very rarely vary from the standard internal door size of 82cm wide x 204cm height, though occasionally they may be somewhere else between 53-92cm wide, or from 204-234cm high. Internal doors are among the cheapest types of doors.

Though they are typically more plain than the front/external doors, you can still find unique internal doors that will match the aesthetic of your house for affordable prices.

4. Double Door

A double door in Australia is typically 203cm high and the width can vary greatly. A safe bet is that a double door will be twice the standard width (hence the name), but it will depend on the type of material used for the door, the space of the home in which the door has been installed, the type of hinge etc.

Double doors can be internal or external and are popular in master bedrooms or for big front doors. They can be hinged or sliding and like front doors, they come in many different styles.

5. French Door

French doors are often regarded the luxurious choice as they add an element of sophistication to a home. Standard two panel French doors are 210cm high and anywhere between 120-180cm wide. Multipaneled French doors are usually 210cm high and between 210-300cm wide.

Much like double doors, they can be internal or external, though they are a common feature of master bedrooms and exterior back doors. They can also come in many different materials and are most common in glass or rustic wood.
