The NSW Master Builders Association Excellence in Construction Awards winners have been announced, with the Royal North Shore Hospital Redevelopment project by Thiess taking home the top prize, the Outstanding Construction Award.

Consolidating 53 outdated buildings into an integrated health campus, the Royal North Shore Hospital and Community Health Services Redevelopment consists of 10,000 square metres of space for community health and 9600 square metres for the hospital.

Pedestrian link bridges, roads, civil works and services diversions are also part of the upgrade.

For this large-scale project, Theiss had to manage a broad range of stakeholders involving approximately 700 meetings with more than 130 user groups.

“The construction was designed to ‘future proof’ the building with in-built flexibility to cater for future changes,” noted the judges.

“Construction methodology was chosen for speed, using available resources and consistency and quality of finish. Some highlights of the building are the façade, which utilises a simplified stud wall façade system, the helipad and the Automatic Guided Vehicles (AGV).”

Other big winners of the night include FDC Construction & Fitout, which received a total of seven awards.

This includes the Digital Realty Data Centre, winner of the Communications Buildings (Data Centre) category, and the Fox Sports/Gore Hill Building C, which won the Commercial Buildings ($25-50 million) award.

Incorporating the Apprenticeship Awards, the MBA Excellence in Construction Awards cater for the entire spectrum of building industry participants, including students, residential, commercial and civil contractors, as well as sub-contractors and recent building degree graduates.
