A new arena in Perth has opened which has drawn on the latest technology and research in sustainability.

Architecture firm Cameron Chisholm Nicol collaborated with ARM Architecture and have included strategies such as displacement ventilation, mixed-mode air-conditioning and one of Western Australia’s largest arrays of photo-voltaic cells on the ceiling.

The building is designed to allow natural light and cool air is filtered from underneath the seats.

Construction took four years more than originally thought and cost under $550 million which is three times over budget.

The 3D software package Rhino was used by a team of over 40 architects to resolve the design and construction issues faced and the architects said the knowledge gained will contribute to other large scale projects in WA and interstate.

Dominic Snellgrove, Cameron Chisholm Nicol Managing Director said:

“We are extremely proud to be involved in delivering a truly world-class sports and entertainment complex for the people of Western Australia," he said.

“It is gratifying to see people embracing the architecture and the experience of the building. Many memories will be created here.”

The building has been designed to cater for 15000 patrons and can be configured to suit a wide range of events and performances.
