The Manly Beach House has taken out the top award from the Building Designers Australia NSW Chapter for 2012.

James Cooper of Sanctum Design envisioned the coastal contemporary residence near Manly Beach in Sydney to capture the essence of a relaxed 1950s beach shack in a modern suburban beachside setting.

As well as the Premier's Award for Design Excellence, the beach house won for New residential buildings over 450 sqm.

Another big winner was Art House One by Kylie Mitchell Designs, which was awarded for New residential buildings up to 250 sqm and the The Penultimate Award/Paul Dass Memorial Award.

The Manly Beach House was designed around the active lifestyle of a vibrant young family. Barefoot beachside living dictated a flow from surf, through the trickle of an outdoor shower and into a sand room where thongs are tossed and surfboards carefully stacked.

The house was conceived as a collection of experiential spaces. Rooms sweep and swell seamlessly between one another, spilling through stackable glazed walls and surging outdoors to create a cross-pollination of zones.

A pool side dining area mirrors its dining room counterpart a stones’ throws away. The shift in emotion between the two spaces is subtle yet striking in its diversity of living options and expansion of space.
