The jury has now been announced for the 2013 Australian Institute of Architects’ New South Wales Architecture Awards.

15 jurors and five chairpersons will assess entries across 10 categories with winners to be announced at a presentation night on 27 June at Jones Bay Wharf in Sydney.

Jury members include heritage expert, Ian Kelly; arts and design broadcaster from the ABC, Fenella Kernebone; as well as international architect Bertram Beissel, design and project partner from Ateliers Jean Nouvel – design architect of 1 Central Park (Sydney) working with PTW architects.

Newly elected NSW chapter president and director at Cox Richardson architects, Joe Agius said:

"This year’s jury comprises a range of leading professionals who have worked across all facets of architecture and design including government, leading international practice and local award-winning firms, which will provide the judging process with rigour and objectivity," Agius said.

Members of the public will be able to view the entries at special presentation days held at Sydney’s Tusculum villa in Potts Point on 22 March (Commercial, Interior, Public, Urban Design, and Residential Architecture – Multiple Housing) and 23 March (Heritage – Conservation and Creative Adaptation, Small Projects and Residential Architecture – Houses and Alterations and Additions).

Entries for this year’s awards close at midnight on 28 February 2013 and are open to all projects located in NSW by members of the Institute.

Winners of 2013 NSW Named Awards and Architecture Awards will progress to the National Architecture Awards to be announced on 7 November 2013 at the Sydney Opera House.

COMMERCIAL AND INTERIOR ARCHITECTURE

Jury Chair - Paul van Ratingen

Paul is a registered architect with over 20 years professional experience throughout Australia and internationally. As a Director of ten years with multi-disciplinary design firm Johnson Pilton Walker; Paul’s projects have been awarded in the Australian Institute of Architecture (AIA) design awards ranging across Urban Design, Public Architecture, Commercial and Interior Architecture categories. Paul’s current projects include the ‘Park Lane’ and ‘Mark’ Residential Apartments in Central Park Sydney; the new Sydney Cruise Passenger Terminal in White Bay; and the Macquarie Bank Global Headquarters in Martin Place, Sydney. Paul also represents Audi as their Australian Master Architect. Paul is a member of the Australian Institute of Architects and sits on the Large Practice Forum. He has lectured and critiqued at University of New South Wales architecture school.

Jury - Tina Engelen (CO-AP (Architects)), Guy Lake (Bates Smart), and Peter Mould (Emeritus Government Architect).

 

PUBLIC ARCHITECTURE AND URBAN DESIGN

Jury Chair - Helen Lochhead

Helen Lochhead is currently Director Strategic Developments with Sydney Harbour Foreshore Authority (SHFA) and Adjunct Professor of Architecture at the University of Sydney. She most recently spent several years as NSW Deputy Government Architect. She has over 20 years’ experience in architecture and urban design. Her career has focused on the inception, planning and delivery of complex large-scale projects ranging from a 5-year city improvements program for the City of Sydney to major urban renewal projects in the United States. Her projects have received numerous awards including an Australian Institute of Architects Urban Design Award.

Jury - Bertram Beissel (Ateliers Jean Nouvel), Dale Jones-Evans (Dale Jones-Evans Architecture) and Chris Procter (Principal Architect - Places Victoria/Director - Project Architecture).

 

RESIDENTIAL ARCHITECTURE – MULTIPLE HOUSING

Jury Chair - Adam Haddow

Adam Haddow is an architect and director at SJB. He is an honours graduate of the University of Melbourne and has practiced in Sydney since 2000. Adam has served two terms as a NSW Chapter Councillor and was awarded the Property Council of Australia’s Future Leader award in 2009. He was awarded a Churchill Fellowship in 2007, is a regular contributor to architectural periodicals and has been a member of the Steel Profile editorial panel for the past 5 years. In 2012 SJB were awarded two multiple housing awards at the NSW Architecture Awards.

Jury - Stephanie Smith (Innovarchi), Marcus Trimble (Bennett & Trimble) and Josephine Wing (NSW Department of Planning and Infrastructure).

 

 

RESIDENTIAL ARCHITECTURE - HOUSES

Jury Chair - Sam Crawford
Sam Crawford graduated from the University of Sydney in 1997 and established Sam Crawford Architects in 1999. The practice of nine works predominately on single residential, small public and community projects. Sam has lectured and been a guest design critic at the architecture schools of each NSW university. Sam is a regular speaker at, and contributor to, architectural and community forums and events across Australia. His work has been widely published both nationally and internationally. He has been the recipient of numerous state and national architecture awards, including a 2012 Australian Institute of Architects NSW Architecture Award and a National Commendation for the Smee Schoff House.

Jury - Fenella Kernebone (ABC broadcaster), Heidi Pronk (Mackenzie Pronk Architects) and Adam Russell (DRAW).

 

SMALL PROJECT AND HERITAGE ARCHITECTURE

Jury Chair - Darlene van der Breggen

As Principal Urban Designer (acting), with the NSW Government Architects Office, Darlene oversees the urban design and master planning aspects of the office's projects. With formal qualification in both architecture and urban design, her past projects include the recently finalised Sydney Olympic Park Master Plan 2030, educational campus master planning in Australia and Asia, and new urban squares for The Rocks and Darling Harbour in Sydney.
