Synthesis Design + Architecture (SDA) has won Volvo’s “Switch to Pure Volvo” competition. The competition challenged entrants to design a rapidly deployable pavilion to showcase and charge Volvo’s new V60 plug-in electric hybrid at fairs and open air presentations in Italian squares.

Latvia

Young Latvian practice NRJA (No Rules, Just Architecture) has designed the ultimate home for globetrotters. The eco-friendly DOM(E) home features a ‘foldable’ self-supporting internal structure made from laminated timber with metal mounts, 200mm insulation and a 9mm fibre concrete slab covered with liquid rubber as exterior finish.

London architect Zaha Hadid has unveiled plans for her first New York project – a boutique apartment block that will be constructed beside New York's popular High Line park. The 11-story chevron-pattern design will be fashioned from steel and glass in Hadid's signature space-age style.

Mazandaran Province, North Iran

A competition to design a set of gates to a residential complex in North Iran has been won by two Italian architecture practices: Waltritsch a+u and Rndr Studio. The firms worked together to conceptualise the gateway, which features a series of punctured corrugated corten steel plates that cast shadows across the ground in traditional Iranian design patterns.

Kohn Pedersen Fox has submitted plans to add 11 floors on top of the existing 30-storey King's Reach Tower on London's South Bank. The project engineer claims this would be the first time such an ambitious extension has been attempted.
