The newlyreleased Green Star – Communities Pilot rating tool will use Lend Lease's Barangaroo South Project as a pilot project for the tool.

The Barangaroo South development will be a mix use space of residential and commercial buildings, public space and a hotel which will form part of the larger $6 billion Barangaroo urban regeneration development on Sydney Harbour.

The Green Building Council of Australia (GBCA) will work with Lend Lease to benchmark Barangaroo South against 38 credits in the Green Star Communities categories of Liveability, Economic Prosperity, Environment, Design, Governance and Innovation.

Lend Lease aims for Barangaroo South to be Australia’s first large-scale carbon neutral community.

Part of Lend Lease's development will be a residential building designed by fjmt which will be committing to a 5 Star Design and As-Built Green Star ratings under the Green Star Multi-unit Residential v1 tool.

Solar gain and cross ventilation to 78 per cent of all apartments are part of the plan to make the building passively sustainable. There will also be sun-shading devices to reduce solar gains and increase control of the internal environment against late afternoon sun.

GBCA’s chief executive, Romilly Madew said:

“Just as, back in 2005, Lend Lease’s 30 The Bond demonstrated that green building was achievable, we expect Barangaroo South will become a new green icon of sustainability at the precinct scale,” she said.

Lend Lease’s managing director for Barangaroo South, Andrew Wilson, said that Lend Lease piloted the first green building rating tools nearly a decade ago.

“Now we are proud to be a pilot project for the next generation of rating tools that examine the sustainability of whole communities. We look forward to testing our sustainability plans against the credit criteria, and assisting the GBCA to test the pilot tool on a live project.”

Barangaroo South when completed will be a mix use space with commercial, residential, retail and dining areas along with a hotel in the 2.9 hectare area.
