Winners in all categories of the 2010 BPN Sustainability Awards were in the running for this prestigious award, which recognises the project which the judges deemed best demonstrated outstanding innovation and excellence.

In 2010 the honour went to BVN Architecture & Elenberg Fraser for Goods Shed North.

Goods Shed North, Docklands, Melbourne, is the redevelopment of an existing derelict heritage listed shed, constructed in 1889 and formerly used as a railway goods distribution shed, into a unique office and retail experience incorporating the latest ecologically sustainable design principles.

The design brief for the project was for the re-development of a disused train freight terminal, to become mixed use; commercial, retail and food and beverage tenancies.

A key aspect of the design of the project required the building be developed so that it provided enough floor space to be economically viable yet designed to allow conversion into a retail arcade at a later date as part of the future plans for Docklands.

Elenberg Fraser worked closely with heritage architects Lovell Chen and developer Equiset-Grollo Group to respond respectfully to the history of structure, which dates back to 1889. This meant maintaining and exposing the original signage and structure while creating a unique modern working environment and re-using the existing Goods Shed by refurbishing and extending in a contemporary manner while preserving the modernity of this industrial artefact.
