A low VOC and low odour paint from Taubmans Pure Performance Interior range was selected by the project team for the internal areas of the Fiona Stanley Hospital in Western Australia.

The $2 billion Fiona Stanley Hospital is Western Australia’s largest single building project and the flagship of the state’s health reform program. Designed by Hassell, Silver Thomas Hanley and Hames Sharley, and built by Brookfield Multiplex, the hospital aims to deliver the best in traditional medicine and clinical care within a naturally healing patient-centred environment.

In keeping with these design objectives, the project team behind Fiona Stanley Hospital sought to minimise volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in interior fixtures and finishes. Though these compounds are known to impact indoor air quality as well as the health of occupants, many building products, especially paints, continue to have high VOC content. VOCs can be emitted into living spaces for up to five years after paint application, exposing the resident or occupant to a range of health problems from asthma to headaches, nausea and even cancer.

Taubmans Pure Performance Interior paint was specified by the project team for all the internal areas of the hospital. Approved by the National Asthma Council Australia’s Sensitive Choice program, Pure Performance Interior is a 100% acrylic, water-based paint that is low in VOC and odour.

Additionally, Pure Performance Interior paints have been engineered by Taubmans to address the specific demands of health applications, especially in reducing the potential for cross-contamination on painted surfaces. For instance, the painted surfaces are scuff-resistant and highly washable to help maintain the hygienic environment crucial in healthcare facilities. The paint includes Microban Antimicrobial Technology, which protects surfaces by killing germs and bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli, while also working to prevent the growth of mould, mildew and fungus.

The Fiona Stanley Hospital incorporates best-practice evidence-based design principles that call for patient-centred, healthy interior environments. Taubmans Pure Performance Interior paint has played an important part in delivering these design objectives.
