The entry portals of Australian’s first underground busport in Perth's CBD have been enhanced by a surprisingly economical custom engineered WAVE BLADE ceiling system from Supawood Architectural Lining Systems.
For this unusual multi-million-dollar infrastructure project the designers, GHD, were searching for a lightweight solution able to meet the high BCA fire hazard requirements and longevity for materials in this externally ventilated space. The client, Public Transport Authority of WA, also had very strict budget constraints.
SUPAWOOD worked closely with all concerned to value manage the design to meet both the budget as well as the stringent requirements for their materials used.
The three entry points from the street are dominated by WAVE BLADE creating directional paths across the ceiling and down the bulkheads leading to and down to the stairs and escalators into the station area below.
A dramatic effect is created by the contrast of the durable Supametal Matt White finish used and the simple black painted ceiling structure above.
The 33mm thick blades were custom manufactured in modules ready for easy installation onsite. They were engineered to ensure complete moisture resistance and fire group 2 or better. SUPAWOOD was able to provide a 15-year warranty on the WAVE BLADE system as required by the client.
This important transport infrastructure has reconnected the CBD and Northbridge for the first time in more than 100 years. Operating more like an airport, the new Perth Busport takes catching a bus to a whole new level.
