Smoke Control  supplied and installed automatic Fibershield H horizontal fire curtains at a major office building in Brisbane.

The office building, which was under renovation, required a fire separation solution. The atrium and interconnecting stairs that extended through eight levels from levels 22 to 29 were non-compliant with the BCA because the atrium design had existing floors above preventing the use of traditional smoke extraction systems.

Smoke Control designed, supplied, installed and commissioned the automatic Fibershield H horizontal fire curtains. Vertical Fibershield fire curtains were also installed to protect the interconnecting stairs.

The overall design concept was focussed on improving the existing building layout to provide a 5 star energy rating. The atrium design was integral to this rating allowing for natural light and air movement between levels.

The seven vertical and four horizontal Fibershield fire curtains needed to be reliable, compact in design, invisible in non-fire mode and accessible for maintenance as well as have battery backup to reduce nuisance deploys over stairs, and audible alarm and flashing lights. Additionally, the fire curtains needed to be fire tested to AS1530.4 for up to two hours and also be able to carry the weight of firefighting water and protect firefighters below.
