An efficient sealing and bonding solution from Sika Australia helped complete a major hotel refurbishment without stopping operation.
The refurbishment of a boutique QT hotel on Queensland’s Gold Coast included the laying of more than 3000 square metres of timber flooring, transforming it into a fresh and modern travel destination. The hotel received new timber floors throughout high traffic areas such as the reception, lift areas and entrance ways.
The work had to be carried out while the hotel was in operation, with around 300 square metres completed every 24 hours including the lift areas on every floor.
Sika’s sealing and bonding solution, SikaBond – T55(J) adhesive was used for fixing the American Oak floor boards to the existing concrete, tile and ply subfloors. Thanks to the minimal surface preparation required for the bonding solution, the fast pace required for the project was met efficiently.
SikaBond - T55(J) is an easy flowing one-part polyurethane adhesive designed for direct elastic bonding of timber floors, facilitating speedy application. The adhesive is of low viscosity and cures on exposure to atmospheric moisture.
Sika Market Field Manager - Sealing and Bonding, Denis Gray worked closely with the contractor, Timber Flooring Unlimited throughout the process.
According to Gray, Timber Flooring Unlimited tested different surface preparation methods and found a light grind was all that was needed to provide strong adhesion. Sika Primer MB was used to provide protection from sub-floor moisture.

The entire flooring work was completed with minimal disruption to hotel guests while still delivering a high quality finish.
