SAS International took home two major honours at the recent Finishes & Interiors Sector (FIS) Contractors Awards 2015. The company won the Project of the Year and Judges’ Awards categories for their work on a highly complex Waveform Tubeline System installation at the Greenwich Gateway Pavilions, United Kingdom.
The first completed project in Knight Dragon's ambitious vision for the Greenwich Peninsula, the new Gateway Pavilions create a gateway between the proposed central park and a newly defined plaza. Initially planned as ‘place-makers’ to indicate the future quality and character of the Peninsula as intended by Marks Barfield Architects, the Pavilions have now become the ‘shop window’ to the seven million people who visit Greenwich each year, acting as an exhibition and event space, and destination in its own right.
The highly detailed and bespoke Greenwich Gateway Pavilion project presented several complex challenges, including a ceiling solution that was required to span the curve. High wind loads demanded an installation method to accommodate up to 150mm deflection, while the ceiling had to move and flex with this structural deviation. Linear tubes were not considered because of the curve of the canopy.
SAS International developed a Curved Tubeline solution testing the architects’ brief against the various site constraints and exploring the manufacturing process through a series of mock-ups. Spanning two curved glass pavilions externally, but also expressed internally, the ceiling forms a distinctive, highly-visible feature.
A 3D doodler was used for a brand new concealed bracket to suspend the tubes away from the mesh. The preferred design was realised using 3D printing technology with all final adaptations carried out prior to production. Once manufactured the successful bracket design was used for both exterior and interior fixings on the project.
Driven by core values of quality, innovation and value, SAS International provides high quality product solutions to project teams and clients pursuing excellence.
The FIS Contractors Awards celebrate design quality and craftsmanship across seven categories, and recognise the commitment to delivering contemporary designs that meet and exceed standards.
