SAS International , the Sydney-based manufacturer of interior fitout
solutions, has received Green Tag accreditation for its metal ceilings.
The first metal ceiling manufacturer to have its products accredited to
Green Tag, SAS International, with its latest achievement, is able to
demonstrate its environmental credentials to clients, architects and builders
with easy to reference and reliable information on its products.
ecospecifier's Green Tag is a third party, green building product rating
and certification system, underpinned by rigorous scientific and Life Cycle
Assessment (LCA) processes. The ecolabel rating positions a product within the
top end of the green product market.
Andrew Jackson, Director at SAS International, explains that the
validation from the Green Tag accreditation proves their true environmental
credentials. Green Tag accreditation also supports their ceiling systems’
contribution to credits, which enable higher Green Star ratings and is an increasingly
important consideration for their customers in Australia.
This news comes as landmark Sydney development Barangaroo South’s Tower
2 has been awarded the highest achievable 6 Star Green Star rating by the Green
Building Council of Australia (GBCA) for its world-class sustainability
features. Over 200,000m² of metal ceiling systems from SAS International have
been specified for the Barangaroo South project.
Making an informed decision for responsible sourcing can be complicated
for developers; adherence by manufacturers to recognised environmental schemes
such as Green Tag helps make the selection process easier for these builders.
SAS International was the first UK-based manufacturer to achieve 15 individual
ISO 14025 Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs), covering over 145
different grid and acoustic backing options. EPDs provide specifiers and
clients with an ISO 14025 standardised report of data collected in the life
cycle assessment (LCA) as specified by the product category rules (PCR) BS EN
15804. SAS International has also subsequently gained independent verification
for these EPDs for its entire range of suspended ceiling systems.
Easy to reference information on environmental credentials is important
for Green Star building ratings, as are considerations regarding whole life
cycle costs. A Mat 8 credit in Green Star for example, requires a minimum of
20% post-consumer recycled content, which is achieved by the SAS metal ceiling
systems.
Apart from being 100% recyclable, the steel used in SAS ceiling systems provides
a minimum 25-year product life cycle.
