RAIA President Graham Jahn will address the National Press Club on Wednesday 2 October, with a talk titled ‘Architecture’s War on Words’. The address will mark the launch of the first National Architecture Week, taking place from 7 to 14 October, and is timed to coincide with World Architecture Day and World Habitat Day.

“In a wrong-headed march to categorise, define and prescribe future city design, words have become the weapons of the planning and approval departments of local councils, preventing innovative contemporary design and to maintain social segregation,” said Mr Jahn.

“While architects waste time battling ‘future character’, the real and important issues of sustainability in our buildings are pushed to the bottom of the agenda and genuine creativity is all but suffocated.”

The address, to be broadcast live on the ABC, promises to make people start thinking about what type of environment we are building for the future.
