The Projex Group list of Top 20 favourite green rooftops features an energy-saving roof garden in Chicago.

Designed by McDonough + Partners and Conservation Design Forum, the rooftop garden on Chicago’s City Hall stands out in a sea of tall buildings for its splash of greenery, providing a moment of repose for all workers in the surrounding skyscrapers.

The rooftop garden on Chicago City Hall in Illinois was designed as part of an initiative to improve urban air quality and reduce the urban heat island effect. The enormous green roof is helping the City Hall reduce energy consumption, saving them about $5,000 a year on energy bills.

Though not usually open to public access, Chicago’s City Hall roof garden can be viewed from vantage points across all 33 taller buildings in the neighbourhood.
