Moddex supplied a range of compliant bridge barriers, handrails and bikeway barriers for the Blaxland Bridge section of the M80 Monash Freeway Upgrade project in Melbourne, Victoria.

Project background

A cornerstone of Victoria’s major infrastructure projects, the M80 Ring Road Upgrade connects the growing northern and western suburbs to major arterials including the Hume, Tullamarine and Westgate freeways, and the future North East Link.

The project will feature a widened freeway, on and off ramps as well as a new freeway management system along 38km of road from Laverton North to Greensborough. This will increase capacity, improve safety and create more reliable travel times for the 165,000 motorists who use the road each day.

Strong focus on innovation to meet our partners’ construction needs

With many of our infrastructure partners facing more rigorous compliance standards, Moddex remains focused on investing in new barrier technologies to meet the changing needs.

These include the proprietary Bridgerail barrier system, which meets the new standards for bridge construction in Australia and New Zealand (AS5100.2 Clause 12.5 and the NZTA Bridge Manual Compliant to Clause B6.4).

This was a critical consideration in Moddex’s selection by CPB Contractors to supply over 500 linear metres of bridge barriers that were required for Blaxland Bridge on the M80 Monash Freeway Upgrade.

“We are able to design and manufacture the barriers to perfectly suit the specific project requirements,” said Rick Parbery, major projects consultant. “Our in-house team numbers each section to match up with the design drawings.”

“Bridgerail is an easy, safe and compliant solution that’s available for our partners. Because of the prefabrication, it’s always ready to go and roll out.”

As part of this project, Moddex also supplied Tuffrail industrial handrails on a number of maintenance sections and nearly 50 metres of bikeway barriers from our Bikesafe family of products. The BS20 was installed behind the privacy screen along a section of the M80 Upgrade, creating safer pathways for local cyclists.

More work to be done on the M80 Ring Road Upgrade

Moddex is heavily involved in further sections of this critical infrastructure project, designing and supplying a range of modular barrier systems for our construction partners. Our team is able to overcome design or resourcing challenges, helping to deliver tailored solutions that reduce overall costs and minimise risk.
