The 7th Making Cities Liveable Conference will be held at Mantra on Salt Beach in Kingscliff, NSW from 9th to 11th July 2014.

Steven Burgess’s presentation titled 'Streets across the Globe' at the 7th Making Cities Liveable Conference will explore the techniques and implications of restoring the art of designing streets for people, as part of the open space network, as a place for gathering and exchange, and for social and commercial betterment.

Streets are possibly one of the most misunderstood and mismanaged part of the urban and regional infrastructure. A significant part of intellectual and financial effort now goes towards making streets safe and accessible for car travel, at the expense of some of the other traditional street activities, such as gathering and exchange.

Steven’s presentation not only explores a new design philosophy but also a new design methodology to break the nexus between street design and traffic volume, and reinforces the universal link between streets and people. This new approach requires the coming together of transportation planning and engineering, street design, public realm design and land use in order to provide more diverse transportation systems and accessible land use patterns.
