The largest state funded road upgrade in Victoria’s history recently utilised up to 30 variable message signs from the new Kennards Hire  traffic management centre in Victoria.

The West Gate Freeway Alliance, which is responsible for one of the four sections in the $1.39 billion Monash-CityLink-West Gate Upgrade, hired the variable message signs from Kennards Hire at varying times throughout the project.

The West Gate Freeway Alliance, comprising Baulderstone, Hyder Consulting, Parsons Brickerhoff, Thiess and VicRoads, is upgrading the 6.2km section of freeway spanning the western end of the CityLink tunnels to the West Gate Bridge, and with more than 160,000 vehicles a day using this freeway section, good traffic management has been vital.

Dave Lenden, traffic management superintendent for the West Gate Freeway Alliance, said Kennards Hire had supplied up to 30 variable message signs for detour routes and other purposes on an “as needed” basis.

“The equipment supplied has been clean and tidy, communication from the company has been excellent and the understanding of instructions regarding placement to various locations has been very good. The after-hours response has been excellent," says Lenden.

Equipment which can be hired from Kennards Hire traffic management hire centres in Melbourne and Adelaide includes:

  • solar-powered variable message sign boards (including colour units and radar models)
  • trailer-mounted traffic lights and arrow boards
  • light towers (trailer and skid-mounted);
  • and utility LED lights
  • barriers
  • road plates
  • road signs; and
  • moulded rubber cable humps.
