Kennards Hire provided the Cross City Tunnel with concrete preparing equipment in the construction of the tunnel, through its recently established division Kennards Concrete Care .

Kennards Concrete Care (KCC) believes it is the first in Australia to have made available for hire concrete specific equipment.Specialising in surface concrete preparation and repair, the company has equipment available to hire for drilling, sawing cutting, demolition, new concrete works and equipment for all types of coating applications. This type of equipment was exactly what was required for the cross City Tunnel, which became the largest and most complex infrastructure project ever undertaken in NSW.

In need of levelling the concrete and removing excess shortcrete, Baulderstone Hornibrook Bilfinger Burger (BHBB) called upon Kennards Concrete care for their specialist advice. A couple of miniloaders with polyplaners 250 attached onto them, alongside another set of miniloaders with profilers 150 were put onto the job. ‘The equipment was great, definitely worthwhile for this job, hiring this sort of equipment makes a lot of sense’ says Glen Houpapa from BHBB.

The equipment was used to put the curbs onto the entry point of the cross-city tunnel as well as for line removal and used to remove excess shotcrete from the tunnel.

The 2.2 Kilometer tunnel that runs between the eastern edge of Darling harbour and Kings Cross is built to take more than 90,000 vehicles a day off city streets when it works to capacity. It is therefore crucial that the right equipment is used to prepare roads for such heavy usage.

“Our range of equipment is being updated on a day-to-day basis. We are always on the lookout for new items that are specific to flooring and concrete. Our staff is trained to know the various applications and advice to give. The Cross City Tunnel is just one example of major projects our equipment is used in,” Angus Kennards says.
