Renowned architecture firm Rothelowman recalls the industrial past of South Melbourne in the design of their latest residential development, SOUTH.

Within walking distance from both the CBD and some of Melbourne’s famed terrace houses and popular cafés, South Melbourne offers the best of both worlds, impressing prospective homeowners with an unbeatable location and an enviable lifestyle. South Melbourne has a Walk Score of 92, one of the highest in Melbourne with the local population consisting predominantly of affluent young professionals aged 20-39, and more than half having a formal qualification. A new $44-million, state-of-the-art primary school is also coming up just 300 metres from SOUTH.

Designed by Rothelowman for the local owner-occupier market, SOUTH features just 69 apartments across eight levels to create a form that is respectful to its surrounds while creating a truly boutique feel. Paying tribute to South Melbourne’s working class origins, and drawing inspiration from its industrial past, the architects are using natural materials reminiscent of the local streetscape in the design.

The project combines an impressive curved glass façade, finessed with high quality finishes that mixes interlocked claddings, polished stone and ornate landscaping throughout, with subtly stylish apartments featuring a neutral colour palette and wood-finished floors, accentuated by white-painted panelling with ceramic and stone fixtures.

Managing Principal at Rothelowman Nigel Hobart said incorporating South Melbourne’s rich history and existing design elements was a key component of creating a development that would enhance its environment.

Hobart explains that South Melbourne is in the midst of an exciting transformation from a quiet pocket of Melbourne consisting of modern cottages and industrial surrounds, to one of Melbourne’s most prestigious and sought-after locations. The architects were keen to create something modern and innovative that would also pay homage to the location’s unique character.

Mr Hobart adds that SOUTH is a milestone building that will shape the local landscape and stand the test of time. Located on Thistlethwaite Street, South Melbourne, SOUTH includes ground floor retail spaces and offers 69 one, two and three bedroom apartments.
