The extensive use of Havwoods engineered timber helped the owners of a new home in North Curl Curl, NSW achieve their design goals.

Designed by Peninsula Homes, the home is located in the northern Sydney suburb of North Curl Curl. Paul Ackling of Peninsula Homes, who designed the house, specified Havwoods Genuine Reclaimed Barn Oak for the project.

Universally, timber is the go-to material for building designers and architects when the design intent is to achieve something truly unique and full of character for the project. Being a natural product, variation is expected and no two planks are ever the same. Timber also has the added advantage of introducing warmth into a space. Engineered timber goes a step ahead by offering a stable, yet versatile product.

According to Paul, the North Curl Curl client was fascinated by industrial and reclaimed products. The material selection for the project reflected this preference, with polished concrete floors, reclaimed bricks and rusting Coreten steel specified in the build. This industrial look was complemented by Havwoods Genuine Reclaimed Barn Oak engineered timber in a number of key areas, the highlight being a 2.4m wide barn style sliding door that allowed the formal lounge area to be closed when required, while adding a striking feature to the home’s entry foyer.

Skilful joinery was used to create a substantial custom piece in a hallway recess in addition to a floating fireplace shelf in the living room. A steel post near the stairwell in the living room was seamlessly clad in Barn Oak, transforming an ordinary structural steel element into an authentic feature in the design.

This unique home was also featured in the popular television show, Best Houses Australia in 2015.
