FireMaster fire curtains provide environment-friendly fire protection in ACT building

    Greene Fire

FireMaster horizontal and vertical fire curtain barriers were installed in the NewActon Nishi building in ACT to provide fire protection in an atrium application.

The Fender Katsalidis-designed building developed by PLY Group with ARUP as the Fire Engineer, had the Department of Climate Change and Energy Efficiency as the anchor tenant, necessitating an environment-friendly fire protection plan.

The inclusion of two atriums in the 10-storey commercial development was meant to allow plenty of natural light, and facilitate ease of people movement while also reducing building materials needed during construction. However, the atriums also created the unique challenge of having to manage both fire and smoke spread between floors.

Coopers Fire worked closely with PLY Group to deliver 10 FireMaster NVS horizontal fire curtains and 3 FireMaster vertical active fire curtain barriers, ensuring compliance with the strict Green Star and NABERS requirements. The low power consumption of Coopers’ 24Vdc drive motors with gravity fail-safe operation reduced running costs and helped the development achieve the coveted 6 Star Green Star and 5 Star NABERS ratings.

Specific life safety features were incorporated into the fire engineered solution for the fire curtain barriers. Closing the openings within 45 seconds of alarm activation was the most important of these features. To achieve this, the engineers at Coopers Fire created a bespoke closing mechanism that was able to close an 8m draw on the horizontal fire curtain barrier within these constraints. The design was simulated, prototyped and then built and successfully cycle tested within two weeks, the deadline for the project.

The fire protection solution installed at NewActon Nishi provided a cost-effective way of compartmenting the atria, reduced building materials, and lowered power consumption to suit the Green Star building design. The fire curtains remain concealed during normal building use, and automatically close to provide a 2-hour fire protection in a fire event.
