A Coopers SmokeStop smoke curtain system was installed at the King Street Wharf project in NSW to provide a sophisticated level of smoke management in an atrium application.
Designed by Fitzpatrick + Partners for the developer Brookfield Multiplex with ARUP consulting as fire engineer, the King Street Wharf building featured large open floor areas and an open internal atrium between levels 1 and 10. This meant traditional smoke control and air handling systems could not provide a suitable level of smoke management to safely evacuate the building in the event of a fire.
Given that each floor had an area of 3,600 square metres and expected occupant levels were in excess of 3,000 within the building, fire and smoke modelling determined that the time to evacuate people through the fire escape paths wouldn’t be long enough.
A Coopers SmokeStop smoke curtain system inclusive of side guides (zero edge gaps) was used with bespoke operation and controls. Three different automated alarm scenarios were incorporated into a custom fireman’s override panel to meet the objectives of the fire engineer’s design. This allowed for the cascading deployment of the smoke curtains across all levels as well as safe retracting of smoke curtains on a fire-affected floor. The fire brigade had the ability to override the automated operation and retract or deploy the curtains on each floor.
The solution also had to factor in the unique architectural design of the building that featured pods and link bridges traversing the atrium, introducing additional requirements on the smoke curtains to allow safe evacuation of occupants as well as facilitate firefighter access. A custom retract functionality was incorporated into the system allowing for smoke curtains to be retracted on either side of the link bridges with a simple press of a button.
Thanks to the bespoke Coopers SmokeStop smoke curtain system, the project was able to achieve its architectural design, complete with open atrium, link bridges and pods without compromising the safety of the building occupants. The highly detailed fire engineering solution was custom designed and built by Coopers’ in-house engineering department.
