Flowshield SL epoxy flooring system installed in Bakhresa’s Durban flour mill production area

    Flowcrete

Flowshield SL, a resilient, self-smoothing epoxy flooring system from Flowcrete was installed in the production area of a Bakhresa Group flour mill in Durban. The USD 800-million food producer Bakhresa Group specified a hardwearing epoxy floor as part of a recent renovation project to turn their ageing Durban facility into a state-of-the-art flour mill.

Bakhresa sought a floor coating that would be able to maintain a hygienic surface despite the challenging working conditions at the large-scale food production facility. The floor would be exposed to heavy equipment, intense cleaning regimes, corrosive by-products, thermal shock and frequent foot traffic. To ensure the floor was up to the task, a combination of high performance resin solutions from Flowcrete was chosen for the revitalised flour mill.

Flowshield SL epoxy flooring system was applied within the mill’s critical production area for its ability to withstand high mechanical and chemical stress while being able to maintain a seamless finish in the face of Bakhresa’s busy everyday workload.

Flowshield SL’s joint-free and impervious nature makes it a hygiene asset within food and beverage facilities, as it leaves no hard-to-clean gaps for bacteria, mould, mildew and fungi. The seamless surface allows any dirt or grime to be quickly and easily washed away by the site’s cleaning regimen, minimising the risk of contamination incidents.

The Flowshield SL 1000 system was specified for the non-critical areas of the site, such as the warehouse, packaging and logistics spaces. This epoxy resin finish would provide the same hygienic and aesthetic properties as the production room floor but it could be thinner in these areas as it would not have to endure such rigorous conditions.

The entire project used 11,000 square metres of resin materials to bring the facility’s floor up to the necessary standard. Flowcrete supplied all the systems in a custom Sand Yellow colour in order to meet the client’s aesthetic requirements.

Bakhresa chose Flowcrete for the project based on the resin specialist’s long and proven history of supplying food and beverage producers with floors designed to overcome the industry’s multiple challenges.

Flowcrete not only supplied flooring systems that met the various practical demands across Bakhresa’s new site but was also the only manufacturer that was able to deliver the materials quickly enough to meet the renovation’s strict deadline.
