Resin flooring specialist Flowcrete provided visually striking and stylised flooring solutions to the Menai Science Park in Wales, UK to match the site’s interior design. The two materials, Peran Comfort and Rustik Natural Stone helped create a clean, modern aesthetic by providing the right amount of contrast to the interior scheme.

Located on the Welsh island of Anglesey, the new Menai Science Park or M-SParc is the first dedicated science park in Wales, UK. Owned by Bangor University, M-SParc delivers space, support services and outstanding facilities to businesses of all sizes. The facility provides an energetic working environment in the form of offices, laboratories and meeting rooms where collaborations are encouraged and ignited by chance encounters in the shared spaces. The client sought this energy to be reflected in the building’s interior.

Designed by FaulknerBrowns Architects, the building features a continuous white ‘ribbon’ wrapped around the Open Innovation Space. A seamless floor finish was required to match the pure white of the external Corian cladding. Flowcrete supplied two different materials to provide the ideal amount of contrast for the design to pop and achieve the desired aesthetic.

Peran Comfort from Flowcrete was chosen in Light Grey and Signal White for the stairs, landing and foyer areas of the Open Innovation Space. This flooring system provides noise reduction and durability, making it perfect for areas where heavy footfall and the accompanying noise are expected. The light colours chosen for the pathways inside the building also help to reflect the light, creating the spacious and bright atmosphere desired by the client.

In contrast to the matt, self-smoothing polyurethane-based Peran Comfort floor coating, Flowcrete’s Rustik Natural Stone was utilised in the entrance area. Featuring a crisp white colour and modern style, this material provides a natural texture to the space, as well as a touch of glamour. The flooring’s striking aesthetic is backed by highly functional benefits such as noise reduction, slip resistance and durability, making it ideal for high traffic entranceways. Rustik’s Natural Stone aesthetic also provides visual continuity with the paving in the external landscape, further emphasising how the design of the exterior is mirrored within the interior.

The application process began with the substrate being prepared and a levelling screed installed by hand. The designs incorporated into the surface were then set out using stainless steel rims, which acted as borders between the two materials before the Peran Comfort and Rustik Natural Stone systems were applied using trowels, rollers and squeegees. The installation process was concluded with a final sealer coat.

The application was completed within its two-week schedule, much to the appreciation of the clients.
