A combination of specialist flooring systems from Flowcrete has been installed at the historic Mohammed Bin Zayed Stadium at Zayed Sports City in Abu Dhabi.

Named after the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the founder and first president of the UAE, the stadium was opened in 1980 and has hosted many international and regional sport events. It is also a popular venue for music concerts.

The stadium underwent a major refurbishment ahead of the high profile FIFA Club World Cup held in December 2009 to provide a complete upgrade of the while facility and bring the seating capacity up to approximately 42,000.

Architect firm Populous specified Flowcrete to carry out the flooring refurbishment based on its references at other international stadia including the Telstra Stadium in Australia, Eden Park in New Zealand and Wembley in the UK.

Flowcrete’s Deckshield polyurethane deck-coating system was selected for the track surround in order to offer a durable and fully trafficable surface that was able to withstand heavy foot and vehicular traffic. Following removal of the old rubber surround, the Deckshield was applied over asphalt for a super fast-track installation.

Vik Vithlani, Flowcrete Middle East’s Business Development Manager explained that the large track surround area had to be completed quickly due to the very tight program. “Deckshield is easy to install and provides a monolithic, extremely hard-wearing floor finish.”

A total of 12,000 square metres of Deckshield flooring systems were installed.

Flowcrete’s Flowfast Quartz flooring system was selected for refurbishment of the washroom blocks as it is extremely durable and has ultra rapid cure properties, enabling the floor to be ready for use just two hours after installation.

“The excellent bond properties of Flowfast also mean that it can be installed over the existing floor surface, in this case the old tiles, and still be able to take heavy foot traffic on match days and concert nights,” added Vithlani.

Around 2,500 square metres of the flooring system, which included a decorative quartz aggregate, were installed.

Flowcrete Middle East and Flowcrete Australia are subsidiaries of Flowcrete Group Ltd.
