Indoor plants are an excellent addition to any interior decor plan as they enhance the design aesthetic as well as keep the air fresh, healthy and free of toxins. However, houseplants need regular care and maintenance just like any garden plant. If you are exploring the idea of having potted plants indoors but may not have the time for care, you should choose your plants carefully.

Evergreen Walls has put together a list of five low-maintenance indoor plants that will help you introduce greenery into your living space with minimal effort.

1. Philodendron

Philodendron may look exotic but it is one of the easiest plants to grow and keep happy. It comes in different varieties, shapes and sizes to meet your design requirements. In terms of maintenance, a philodendron needs to be watered only occasionally. Since it shouldn’t be placed in direct sunlight, a nice quiet corner is more than enough for the philodendron to thrive.

2. Aloe

The humble aloe is a highly useful plant to have around the house. Very low maintenance, the plant just needs a good soak once every fortnight. Best of all, it’s the perfect remedy for minor cuts and burns – just snip off a piece of the plant and place it on the wound for soothing comfort.

3. Calathea

Calathea stands out for its striking foliage and is known by many names including Zebra Plant, Peacock Plant and Rattlesnake Plant. Some varieties have pink, purple or red leaves. A perfect houseplant, it needs small amounts of water about once a week. Direct sunlight can fade its hallmark leaf markings, so position it in a place where it can soak up indirect sunlight.

4. Peace Lily

The peace lily is an easy-to-please plant – it will, in fact, indicate to you when it needs water. When the plant’s leaves start to droop, it’s a sign that it needs to be watered. Once watered, the leaves will perk right back up again. Peace lilies are especially good at cleaning toxins out of the air, and are therefore, perfect for keeping your home or office interior fresh. They like a bit of sunshine, and some varieties can grow up to six feet.

5. Mother-in-Law’s Tongue

A plant that can go for a whole month without being watered, the mother-in-law’s tongue is the perfect plant for most humans. With stiff, upright leaves in many different colours and varieties, the mother-in-law’s tongue doesn’t need to be watered until the soil is dry; also water around the edges of the plant rather than right in the middle.

Artificial Alternatives

Of course, when you are looking for zero-maintenance plants, you can go for artificial plants that will always remain green and beautiful without needing watering, pruning or fertilising.
