Chatterton Lacework recommends powder-coating rather than hand-painting for all aluminium lacework.

Powder coating not only comes with a lifetime guarantee but also offers a smooth and consistent coat compared to hand painting. However, if one still chooses to hand paint, Chatterton Lacework recommends the use of an etch primer first so that the paint is able to stick to the aluminium better.

For cast iron lacework, Chatterton Lacework applies two coats of powder-coating. Though the double coat does increase the cost of the powder coating, it also helps cover up any rust or corrosion that will eventually occur in the future, extending the life of the product.

However, cast iron lacework can be hand-painted after etch priming it. Cast iron lacework, if bought unpainted can be taken home the same day.
