Aluminium lacework can look as authentic as cast iron lacework if reproduced correctly, and especially when installed in balustrades, gates and fences.

Before installing aluminium lacework balustrades in old buildings, it is important to ensure that the woodwork is level and sound. Incorrect use of lightweight aluminium lacework or even cast iron lacework can produce unsatisfactory results.

Balustrades were generally installed using a timber top rail; however, a wide range of authentic looking aluminium handrails are manufactured today. The majority of aluminium handrails in Sydney were smaller and made of steel or aluminium.

Aluminium handrails made today come in timber finishes, are maintenance-free and much lighter to work with, and will not rot or corrode.

Aluminium handrails are available from Chatterton Lacework .
