FOUR Case Earth Awards were conferred in WA this year, for outstanding projects in remediation and infrastructure development. Winners of the WA Case Earth Awards for Environmental Excellence were the remediation of an old railways workshop site and the construction of stage seven of the Roe Highway. DM Civil won their award for their part in remediating an area of the former Midland Railways Workshops in the Clayton Precinct. The Roe 7 Alliance, based in Perth, won their award for delivering a $75 million 4.5 km freeway extension through pristine urban bushland, tailoring the project along the way to minimise the environmental impact.

In the construction excellence category, the winning entries were the construction of a breakwater extension and a major upgrade to a section of the Perth main sewer. A breakwater at Hillarys boat harbour, north of Perth, was extended to protect the boats moored at the harbour from large waves which sometimes penetrated a gap between existing breakwaters at the site. Award winners Rocktec Contracting used purpose-built semi-trailers to haul 30,000t of core and armour rock from the excavation site at Brighton, 27 km away.

DJ and MB MacCormick Civil Engineering won an award after completing a major upgrade of the Perth Main Sewer Section 5. MacCormick’s task included constructing 865m of main sewer and over 1,000m of reticulation sewers in existing roadways.
