The Australian International Design Awards has awarded Swedish-based company, Electrolux, the 2011 Design Award for Sustainability for their energy efficient Ultrasilencer Green vacuum cleaners.
"Addressing its biggest life cycle impacts of energy consumption, materials use and embodied energy, this product is 35% more efficient and uses 55% recycled plastic in its manufacture. But its quietness will be what wins the hearts of parents with young children," the judges of this year's Awards commented.
These UltraSilencer vacuum cleaners are the 'quietest vacuum cleaners ever', producing sound at a record low noise level of 68 dB(A). They feature a powerful Aeropro nozzle system for dust and dirt pickup, and Clean Air HEPA 13 filtration to help ensure clean air in the home.
Managing Director of Good Design Australia, Brandon Gien, said the judges performed a thorough physical inspection on all 232 product entries, assessing form, function, quality, safety, sustainability, innovation and best in class design.
"Good Design Australia is committed to creating a better Australia where good design is ubiquitous and leads to a better, safer, more beautiful and sustainable world," Gien said.
"To win the Sustainability Design Award, one product needs to demonstrate that little bit extra for the environment," he said, adding that nine additional criteria including product need, durability and longevity, energy and water efficiency during manufacture and use and packaging minimisation, were assessed by the judges.
"This year the Electrolux UltraSilencer Green vacuum cleaners passed our stringent criteria to represent best practice Design for Sustainability and be a deserving winner of this special award."
