The Australian International Design Awards has attracted a record number of submissions for the 2011 program.

Good Design Australia announced that the Australian International Design Awards 2011 has a record total of 232 innovative products competing for the 2011 awards.

Mr Brandon Gien, Managing Director of Good Design Australia views the development as a very positive indication that businesses in Australia are seeing the value and importance of differentiating their products and services through design.

Mr Gien is satisfied with the high standard of the submissions and the calibre of the companies behind the entries.

He also observes a noticeable trend in this year’s entries towards products that have been designed to be more energy-efficient and conscious of sustainable design practices.

The sustainable design aspect seen in many products range from the material they are manufactured from, energy consumed during use or consideration given to the product’s end of life.

Mr Gien adds that sustainability is a very important design criterion that their judges would be considering while assessing these products, together with other factors such as form, function, quality, safety and innovation.

This year’s awards will include recognition of one product that exemplifies excellence in sustainable design.

The Australian International Design Awards presentation ceremony will be held on Friday 22 July 2011 in Melbourne as part of the Victorian State of Design Festival with all finalists being showcased to the general public for the first time.
