Australian Disabled Access Consultants  recently helped to arrange disabled access for a restaurant fit-out within the Cronulla Shopping Centre. They helped to arrange disabled access into and within the restaurant and the accessible toilet for the Govinda Valley Retreat Cafe.

Australian Disabled Access Consultants provided disabled access design advice to ensure disabled access compliance with Part D3 of the Building Code of Australia (BCA) and Australian Standards AS1428.1-2001disabled access and wheelchair access guidelines for:

  • Continuous safe pathway of travel throughout the ground floor part of the restaurant
  • Continuous safe paths of travel within the external pathway
  • Building entry doorway
  • Doorway width and corridor width
  • Accessible toilet redesign
  • Floor-ceiling heights along all movement pathways
The disabled access and wheelchair access negotiations included an unjustified hardship claim against the requirements to provide an AS1428.1 compliant front entry doorway to remove an existing step for an internal step ramp up to the shop’s existing floor level that would have had a severe impact on the available floor area of the small shop premises due to the existing building constraints.

Australian Disabled Access Consultants prepared the development application’s disabled access assessment report and congratulates Govinda Valley Retreat for its innovative building fit-out design to improve disabled access within the restaurant that will also provide disabled person’s employment opportunities.
