Project overview

Queensland’s largest teaching and research hospital, Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital (RBWH) required an extension to house its new Hot Cells Radiation chamber. The chamber required a high spec clean room and associated air locks to eliminate contamination and provide protection for the Chemotherapy treatment it produced. The hot cell itself weighs 68tonne!

Hutchinson Builders were awarded the contract.

The challenges and solutions

The extension to the hospital required four P4 rated clean rooms and associated airlocks, with detailed pass through chambers to allow transfer in a sterile environment. The use of mechanically interlocked doors helped retain integrity of the separate environments.

The challenges faced include:

  • The strict detail within the project
  • The coordination of specialised components with long lead times from overseas
  • The logistics of working in an operational hospital within the Brisbane CBD area

ASKIN manufactured and installed XFLAM insulated panel with COLORBOND® Permagard® steel skin with antibacterial protection.

The insulated panel, custom doors and double-glazed windows were all installed using the ASKIN concealed fix system. Following installation, each room was smoked and pressure tested to ensure the rooms were airtight and secure from contaminants. These contaminants can range from dust and chemical gases to airborne microorganisms.

Result

The Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital has a new state of the art facility with chemotherapy treatments that will support numerous hospitals throughout QLD.
