AWS windows help designers retain character of heritage listed church-turned-home

    Architectural Window Systems

Windows and doors from Architectural Window Systems helped the construction and design team retain the original condition and character of a heritage-listed church that was transformed into a real home.

Builder Glen Williams saved the heritage-listed Anglican Church of Transfiguration in Norman Park, Brisbane from slow neglect by purchasing it and resurrecting it as a new home. Transforming the church into one of Norman Park’s most prestigious homes was not without its challenges. Seeking to retain the beauty and character of the building, the design team realised that extensive use of windows and doors was a key ingredient in the success of the integrated design.

Expert advice was sought from the fabricator, Bretts Architectural Window Solutions, who reassured the builder that his vision was attainable in terms of manufacture and supply.

AWS windows and doors not only could cope with the sheer magnitude of openings, but also suited the bold and industrial look of the home. Gorgeous expanses of raking windows now stand at both the front and rear of the entry foyer, along with full-height glazing and oversized sliding doors. A feature sliding window in the dining room with disappearing panels allows for optimum views and ventilation and adds to the open and airy feel of the new home.

The windows were installed into large exposed concrete panels, and given special treatment with custom black chunky commercial frames, softened with timber surrounds and lined roof overhangs. The use of Elevate multi-stacking doors recessed into a channel and grate system has enabled level entry at one end of the house; when fully open, the doors combine cooling breezes with amazing views. The old church is connected to the residence, and has been transformed into a large games room.

The team’s abiding commitment to breathing new life into the property while remaining sympathetic to its history, beauty and character was a major reason for its success.

The Church House project was a finalist in the 2016 Fenestration Design Awards for Best Use of Windows & Doors Residential New Construction over $500,000.
