ALSPEC ProGlide commercial sliding doors were selected for installation at the Avalon Beach Surf Life Saving Clubhouse in Sydney to meet important design considerations.

Overlooking one of Sydney's most picturesque beaches, the Avalon Beach Surf Life Saving Clubhouse was in bad shape and in desperate need of renovation. Architects and club members Richard Cole and Robert Hopton were responsible for the transformation.

Key design considerations for the clubhouse included flexibility of use, thermal and acoustic performance, ventilation and ongoing maintenance. The large sliding and stacking ALSPEC ProGlide commercial sliding doors combined with Viridian SmartGlass were specified to provide the perfect mix of performance and function for this application.

Discussing the performance of the ALSPEC ProGlide commercial sliding doors, architect Richard Cole says the doors have been working very well and they haven’t had any issue with the operation. Observing that a surf club needed to be robust because of the environment and very high usage, he said it was important to have simple, straightforward systems that worked well.

The ALSPEC sliding doors have also been delivering excellent acoustic performance with the sound of the surf remarkably muted when the doors are closed.

The switch to acoustic and thermal performance in both the ALSPEC framing and Viridian glazing was instrumental in the Avalon Beach Surf Life Saving Club making the most of its pivotal position as a social and sporting hub.

ALSPEC products used in the project included ProGlide commercial sliding door, McArthur centre pocket framing, and Swan commercial door in 25um clear anodised finish along with Viridian SmartGlass SP30 Neutral Panoramic glazing. ALSPEC fabricator G&R Roby worked on the clubhouse project.
