Aglo Systems was once again engaged by leading Australian hotel brand, Crown Group to provide a bespoke lighting system for the Grand Ballroom at their Crown Perth property.
Having worked with Crown Melbourne for over five years, Aglo was commissioned to engineer and manufacture the Grand Ballroom flower pendants and several other custom built pieces for the new Crown Perth redevelopment.
Working with Bates Smart and Electrolight, Aglo Systems manufactured a large scale RGBW LED bespoke ceiling feature for the ballroom.
The brief for Aglo Systems sought 9 x 6m and 36 x 3m diameter chandeliers; polished mirror gold finish; and RGBW LED and DMX colour control. The solution also needed to meet the specified light output, work within the weight limitations of the ceiling structure, and be cost-effective.
Bates Smart supplied the initial concept drawings to Aglo Systems as part of the brief.
Prototype design and development
To meet the challenging brief for the bespoke ceiling lighting feature, the Aglo Custom Manufacturing team developed the original Bates Smart concept into 3m and 6m wide versions. A stainless steel and aluminium combination, vacuum plated in mirror gold finish, was used in the main structure to reduce the weight load. Roto-moulded spheres rather than glass were used for the diffusers to further reduce the weight.
After preparing shop drawings, a full size 6m prototype was constructed to extensively test the assembly and operation. The installation also had to be carefully planned since there would be limited access to the fittings from above. For the stability of the design, the luminaire had to be assembled and tested at ground level before being lifted into position eight metres above as a complete piece.
Once all the design challenges were resolved, the 45 units were constructed and delivered to the site with the Aglo team supervising the assembly and installation onsite.
Aglo’s bespoke LED ceiling feature has helped create a really impressive Grand Ballroom for Crown Perth.
