Mathew Dalby has been appointed as principal – Interior Design in Buchan’s Sydney studio.

“Mathew brings invaluable knowledge and experience to Buchan. He strives for, and achieves, creative and technical excellence in design and has strong leadership in interior architecture and client management. We look forward to the continued success of Buchan’s interior design team with Mathew’s strategic ambition and creative vision for the company and our clients,” says Bruce Shaw, Buchan Group managing principal.

Dalby, who began his career in interior architecture in the UK, brings a balance of creative and technical skills to the design and development of high-end, luxury residential, retail, hospitality and hotel projects.

"Working for individual clients and developers has given me the ability to look at every project not only through a creative lens, but also with acute commerciality. This means working with a client to solve the day-to-day challenges in a financially astute way whilst also delivering a great concept,” says Dalby.

He is also interested in the societal implications of technology and how it can be integrated into commercial, residential and hospitality environments for the benefit – rather than to the detriment – of human interaction and connection.

“It requires rigorous design awareness to create an environment for people to live, work, play or learn in that has all the advantages technology offers, yet still fosters our basic human need to cooperate, collaborate and integrate,” he says.

As principal, Dalby is will be tasked to continue to develop Buchan’s reputation as a leader in design both locally in Sydney and around the world.

“Creating the right team culture enables designers to do their best work, propose their most creative ideas and to work in an environment in which design can flourish in a natural, organic way,” he says.
