Last week, the Design Institute of Australia (DIA) recognised Western Australia’s best design practitioners and aspiring design students at the DIA WA 2017 Design Awards.

In total, the Best in State Award, six Awards of Merit and 21 Commendations were presented across three primary design principles: Interior Spaces, Product Design and Visual Communication.

Taking out the top prize was Woods Bagot for the design of its Perth studio. The project – which saw the transformation of the 19th-century Palace Hotel – also received an Award of Merit in the Interior Spaces (Corporate) category and a Commendation in Lighting Solutions.

In addition, Woods Bagot received a Commendation for its Stylecraft Showroom and for its 225 St. Georges Terrace Lobby.

Other Award of Merit winners included 19 Douro by Motus Architecture, and John Septimus Roe Anglican Community School – Senior Learning Centre by Brooking Design Architects.

2017 marked the annual award’s 15th year, and is the state’s only multi-disciplinary design program promoting and recognising excellence and innovation in design.
