Victoria Comprehensive Cancer Centre has best elevator system in the world

Australia lays claim to having the best lift system in the world for the second time in three years.

Schindler Australia has taken back the title of Elevator World Project of the Year, New Construction from the US for Australia, receiving the 2017 honour from the International Building Transportation Industry for its elevator system installation at the Victoria Comprehensive Cancer Centre (VCCC).

The win is the second in two years for Schindler and Australia. The Swiss-born company received the same prize in 2015 for its installation of the glass elevators at 50 Martin Place in Sydney before narrowly missing out in 2016 to America’s Hettema Group for its ‘One World Observatory Skypod Elevator’ in New York City (NYC).

Schindler’s 2017 prize came thanks to its sophisticated dedicated elevator destination control system at the VCCC which comprises 23 elevators (either S7000 or S5500) which service multiple areas and are connected into a site wide Remote Lift Monitoring System (RLMS).

The RLMS is able to provide real time monitoring, alarm, diagnostic performance and traffic handling information in both visual screen based and hard copy output, and, according to Schindler, also provides control functionality to allow for dispatching lifts to assist in evacuation and other required lockdown scenarios.

It also incorporates a dedicated priority recall system which responds to calls from emergency response team, Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and critical care patient transfers by taking a nominated lift from group control and sending it to the floor on which the recall originated.

Where allocated, lift cars and landing displays have programmable Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) or Light Emitting Diode (LED) displays which indicate lift position, direction of travel, lift status and service. This can include priority call, exclusive use, fireman service and where specified video and messages.

A total of seven category prizes were announced by the International Building Transportation Industry in 2017, including prizes for moving walkways, escalators, residential lifts and special purpose lifts.
