Delivering sleek and striking apartment and townhouse buildings that would seamlessly blend in with the natural surrounds was the shared vision of Empire Building Group, Kasparek Architects and Civion Construction when designing and building Panaroma Apartments in Canberra.

Striking and sustainable

Panaroma Apartments stand tall amongst the picturesque backdrop of Mt Stromlo, Stromlo Forest Park, Black
Mountain and the Brindabellas in one of Canberra’s newest suburbs, Wright.

The design of the development, which is one of the largest townhouse projects in the area, takes advantage of its setting offering unrivalled views and aspects from its position on the steep sloping block.

Cues were taken from the surrounding environment capturing natural light penetration, delivering high energy efficiency and solar orientation, and incorporating green spaces and extensive landscaping. While the exterior of the building complemented the building’s green credentials and captured a natural tone through the use of Euroclad composite cladding.

Manufactured in Germany using a patented manufacturing process, Euroclad combines finely chopped wood from PEFC Certified forests with the resistance of high quality resins to produce a dimensionally stable and durable material that’s ideal for external façades. The timber-grain-embossed surface and dark cedar colour used not only provided the desired timber look but gave a distinctive warm touch to the outside of the modern day dwellings.

With savings

The pre-finished composite cladding is not only realistic in nature but it’s designed for stability and longevity making it highly appealing and providing long-term value. Being maintenance free it is ideal for high-exposure and difficult-to- access areas and was the perfect solution for the six and four storey apartment buildings and two and three storey townhouse buildings. Its guaranteed quality backed by a 12 year warranty provided peace-of-mind that it wasn’t only going to deliver on the design vision but it was going to look good for a long time with no fading or weathering.

The product’s simple tongue and groove fixing system with machined screw slots also makes it incredibly easy to install and delivers substantial time and cost savings. A Civion Construction representative applauded the fact that everything is prepared and ready to go. “You simply drill into the tophat substructure and slide the top sheets straight-on to gain a nice, grooved timber façade look.”

“What’s more, the vast array of aluminium fixings also allowed us to get the angles we needed for around windows and corners and for start angles,” he said.

“And in terms of look – there’s enough variation to avoid a block look and even up close, you get a really good quality timber graining and the sense of warmth you get from real timber.”
