Space Furniture announces the winner of the Space+Moooi 2014 Design Residency, Sydney-based industrial designer Tom Fereday of Fereday Design.

Chosen from a pool of eight talented contenders shortlisted by Space Furniture in close co-ordination with coveted design company Moooi, Fereday impressed the judges Marcel Wanders, Moooi Founder and Art Director, and Casper Vissers, Moooi Founder and CEO, with the thinking behind his design response, along with his presentation and extensive technical skills.

Marcel Wanders and Casper Vissers announced the winner via a video on behalf of Moooi and Space Furniture.

Tom Fereday submitted the Shove chair collection that encapsulated an impressive mix of design and technical development. Ultimately, the Space+Moooi Design Residency was about choosing a ‘winning person’ with a product that best met the brief.

Casper Vissers observes that Tom’s DNA is a fit with Moooi. While Moooi seeks to create designs with a new approach and/or vision, they must also trigger a client on different levels: function, story, beauty, shape, materials, recognition and happiness.

As the Space Design Residency winner, Fereday will spend eight weeks at the Moooi headquarters in The Netherlands where he will learn about the inner workings of a professional European design brand. Fereday will benefit from insights into the business operations, production techniques and back-end thinking that go into the design and development of a successful product with a world-leading manufacturer.

The ultimate outcome of the Space+Moooi Design Residency for all parties would be that the product developed in collaboration with Moooi would go into production in time for Milan 2015.

Describing the Space+Moooi 2014 Design Residency award as ‘humbling’, Fereday commented that the residency not only provides the opportunity to learn from one of the most celebrated design companies in the world, but will also help him to build a relationship as a designer in Europe with Moooi.

For Fereday, the award caps an impressive career progression over the last seven years that’s been punctuated by a string of national and international design awards, finalist accolades and scholarships.

This is the second Space Design Residency for Space Furniture, and also commemorates the Australian furniture distributor’s 20th year as a retailer of original design. The inaugural Space Design Residency in 2010 was won by Trent Jensen.
