The Woodhead designed new commercial premises and integrated fitout for the South Australian Police headquarters has achieved 5 Star Green Star Certification from the Green Building Council for Office Design, As Built and Office Interiors.

One of only five buildings awarded all three certifications nationally; the SA Police HQ is the first in South Australia setting the benchmark for commercial environmentally sustainable design (ESD).

Throughout the project Woodhead worked with a team of professionals committed to achieving the SA Police ESD requirements ensuring the integration of SAPOL’s functional and performance requirements were met.

Project developer Commercial & General’s managing director Jamie McClurg says the key to the building’s green credentials was the prioritisation of indoor environment quality, water and energy efficiency throughout the building’s design, construction and fitout.

“This is a good example of a totally integrated approach and working closely with the client across all aspects of the project. Our team were responsible for delivering everything from the base building, through to almost every aspect of the fitout, right down to the desk drawers and recycling bins,” McClurg says.

Each floor of the headquarters incorporates a common ‘breakout’ cafe space at the heart of the integrated fitout, and brings the building into line with current workplace expectations. These common spaces are light and spacious with comfortable seating, full kitchen facilities and expansive views of the eastern suburbs and Adelaide Hills.

A key parameter during the design outcome was to emphasise leadership and support as core functional activities and to maximise flexibility and efficiency whilst satisfying specific security and cultural requirements to meet SAPOL’s stringent standards.

The resulting workplace performance increases are over and above the standard Property Council of Australia A-Grade level.
