The 2013 Western Australia Design Institute of Australia (DIA) Design Awards winners have been announced, with the Perth Arena taking home the top prize, the Best in State Award, as well as two Awards of Merit in the Interior Spaces (Public category).

Designed by ARM Architecture and Cameron Chisholm Nicol (joint venture architects), the Perth Arena was praised by the jury for being a versatile entertainment venue that provides an exhilarating experience.

“Innovative use of materials, form and colour along with best practice technology have come together to deliver a truly exceptional public space,” commented the judges.

Winning the Residential Award of Merit under the Interior Spaces branch was the CASA31_4 Room House by Iredale Pedersen Hook and Caroline Di Costa Architect.

Featuring a series of rooms to the interior, garden, horizon and the sky, the project explores years of layering, the art of construction, and knowing what to keep, reveal or remove.

The jury praised the project for pushing “the boundaries of residential building”.

At the same time, the Peasant’s Table restaurant by Taylor Robinson won the Hospitality Award of Merit.

Located in Mount Hawthorn, WA, the Peasant’s Table combines raw materials and industrial detailing with crisp form and intimate space. The architectural arrangement lends itself to showcasing a selection of wines and locally made produce.

Now in its 11th year, the DIA Awards recognise three main disciplines – Interior Spaces, Product Design and Visual Communication. An exhibition of the 2013 entries will be on display at the foyer of 108 St George’s Terrace, from 1 to 15 November.
