Two Australian-born architecture firms have taken home prizes from the Singapore Architecture Awards (SIA) including Studio 505 for its colourful primary school upgrade in Nanyang.
The Melbourne-based studio was joined by WA-born Kerry Hill Architects (KHA) on the winner’s stage, both grabbing major category prize at the SAI’s 16th annual program.
KHA won the Residential Projects – Design Award for its Hana residential development in Singapore, while Studio 505 received the Institutional Projects–Design Award for its leading role on the immensely colourful Upgrading of Nanyang Primary School (NPS), also in Singapore.
Ironically, what stands out for most about the NPS was not the reason it picked up the honour. The SIA judges actually considered the project’s colour palette overly forceful and said they were more convinced with its massing strategy and the architect’s ability to tie together different volumes of spaces, such as basketball court and classrooms, and also conceal the services
KHA also received an honourable mention for its City of Perth Library project in the Interior Architecture Projects and Institutional Projects categories. The City of Perth Library was also recently shortlisted for the Australian Institute of Architects’ National Architecture Awards.
Singapore-based architecture practice WOHA, which was co-founded by Australian architect Richard Hassell, also took home three awards and received two honourable mentions across three different categories.
In total, 27 projects were honoured across six categories which included residential, commercial, institutional, industrial, transport and infrastructure, special and interior architecture.
